What is a Botanical Artist?

Botany, a branch of biology,  is the scientific study of plant life and development.

If you were to draw a picture of a leaf or a flower as accurately as you could, so that every detail of the object was perfectly copied, then you would probably be an botanical illustrator. However, if you add a creative touch to make that accurate flower picture into a beautiful work of art, then you would be a botanical artist. The difference between the accurate, scientific depiction of the flower that might appear in a botany text book, and a lovely painting that is also an expression of the artist's creativity, vision and love for the subject is the difference between an illustrator and an artist.

The text book illustration we might want for study and for learning. The botanical art we would want to have in our home for our joy in its beauty. All art is the practice of some technique or skill to capture a particular element of the life around us in such a way as to produce a desired reaction in the receiver of that art. The botanical artist does this with the plants of the earth. A creative artist painting the same subject would have less, or no, regard for the accurate details. Their painting would be more an impression of the subject, a feeling.

Art can make us happy and art can make us sad. Art can make us think and art can make us dream. But at its best, art can make us stop and look at something in a way we never have seen before, and to find something that touches a fundament part of our individual selves. Art can show us the world in a way we can better understand, but more important, art can show us who we are.
